An event with no organiser to ask
Community events are organised collectively, which means the running order lives in several people’s heads and nowhere on paper.
Asking for a run sheet gets you a shrug and a rough time. That is not disorganisation; it is simply how a function run by volunteers works, and a photographer expecting a corporate schedule will spend the evening a step behind.
What works instead is finding the two or three people who actually know what happens next and staying near them. The committee member with the microphone, the person handling the prizes, whoever is directing the priest. They are the schedule.
The other thing worth agreeing beforehand is who the photographs are for. A society newsletter, a WhatsApp group and a committee record want quite different things, and it is a two-minute conversation that changes what gets shot.

Committee events also tend to have people who should be photographed for reasons that are not obvious from the room.
The person who organised everything, the outgoing secretary, whoever paid for the sound system. Nobody points them out and they are easy to miss.
A two-minute conversation at the start covers it.
Getting ready
Tell us who is coordinating and point us at them on the night. At a volunteer-run function that person is the schedule.
Give us a rough start time rather than a precise one, because a precise one will not survive.
Say who the photographs are for — a newsletter, a group chat, or a formal record.
Planning it
Who knows what happens next.
Roughly when things begin.
And what the images are for, since it changes what gets shot.
Recent work
A selection of recent photographs. Each one is tagged with the kind of shoot it came from — tell us what you are planning and we will show you the work closest to it.
