The lawn is better than it looks
The common green is the most-used and least-considered backdrop in any residential complex.
Shot at the wrong hour, from standing height, with towers behind you, it produces exactly the photograph you would expect. Shot late in the afternoon, low, with the buildings behind the camera rather than behind the family, it produces something that could be anywhere.
That is genuinely most of the difference — time of day and where you stand. Neither costs anything, and both are decided before the session rather than during it.
For larger groups the lawn also solves a problem a flat cannot. Fifteen people do not fit in a living room, and asking half of them to stand in a doorway is how group photographs end up looking like a queue.

The other advantage of the common green is that it can absorb a large group without anyone being asked to stand awkwardly.
Grandparents can sit, children can move, and nobody is pressed into a corner to fit the frame.
That comfort shows in the photographs far more than any technical decision does.
Getting ready
Aim for late afternoon rather than the middle of the day. It is most of the difference between a good society-lawn photograph and a poor one.
Check whether your society needs permission for photography in common areas, and tell us the answer rather than assuming.
Agree clothes loosely as a group — a shared palette, nothing bought specially.
Planning it
How many people, since that decides indoors or out.
Whether the lawn or the flat, and whether permission is needed.
And the ages of the oldest, because the running order follows from it.

Tell us the number. Large groups need space and a plan for the order, which is why outdoors often beats a living room.
That depends entirely on your society, so please check rather than assume. We will work to whatever the answer is.
