This is one of the few sessions that simply does not care what the sky is doing.

It happens indoors, near a window or at the studio, and an overcast day is if anything better than a bright one.

That is worth knowing because families frequently postpone these waiting for nice weather, which is not a thing that helps.

What matters instead is the quality of the light indoors, and soft grey daylight is the best version of that.

Where an outdoor session is wanted for variety, it is worth treating as an addition rather than the plan, and keeping it short.

A fifteen-minute outdoor stretch on a good day is a bonus. An hour outdoors as the entire session is a plan that depends on conditions nobody controls.

The indoor part happens regardless, which is the whole reason to structure it that way round.

The brightest room in a flat is frequently not the one with the biggest window.

A smaller window facing an open direction beats a large one facing a wall or a shaft, and people are usually surprised by which room actually wins.

If you are unsure, look at each room in the middle of the day and pick whichever is brightest without a light switched on.

That is the room, whatever its size and whatever else is in it.

The other useful habit is to switch off the ceiling light entirely rather than leaving it on to help.

Mixed light from a window and a bulb produces colour casts that are visible on skin, and daylight alone is almost always better.
