The last hour

These sessions are short, which means the hour they happen in matters more than usual.

An hour at midday and an hour before sunset produce noticeably different photographs of exactly the same two people in exactly the same place.

With a longer booking there is time to wait for better light. With one hour there is not, so the hour has to be the right one from the start.

The last stretch of daylight is soft, low and warm, and it flatters everybody without anything being done to achieve it.

An overcast day widens that considerably — the light stays even for most of the afternoon rather than for one hour.

Which means a grey forecast is a reason to relax rather than to reschedule, and couples reschedule for it constantly.

The studio remains an option and it is entirely unaffected by any of this, which suits people who would rather not depend on a sky.

Where the session runs into dusk, the fifteen minutes after the sun has gone are worth staying for.

The light becomes even and slightly cool, faces are lit softly from every direction, and it produces a noticeably different set from the hour before.

Most sessions end before reaching it, which is why so few couples have photographs from it.

The other point is that a windy day matters more than a grey one here.

Hair, clothing and general comfort all suffer in wind in a way they simply do not under cloud, and it affects the photographs more.

If a day is genuinely unpleasant to be outside in, the studio is there and it is not a lesser option.
