Family Photography in Ghorpadi, Pune

Family sessions in Ghorpadi — outdoors at the hour that actually works, which is later than most people suggest.

Later than you think

Almost every family suggests a mid-morning or midday session outdoors, and almost every one of those is the wrong hour.

High sun puts shadows under everybody's eyes, makes people squint, and produces exactly the harsh, contrasty photographs nobody wants.

The last hour or two before sunset is a completely different proposition — low, warm, soft, and flattering to everybody regardless of age.

That single change costs nothing and is the largest improvement available to an outdoor family session.

It matters more with a large group, because a group cannot be moved into shade the way two people can.

An overcast day removes the problem entirely and widens the usable hours considerably, which is why grey weather is good news rather than bad.

Where the session has to be at midday, open shade is the answer and it is worth choosing the location for that rather than for the view.

Where a group must be photographed under bright sun, the direction everybody faces matters more than where they stand.

Facing into the sun produces squinting; facing away produces shadowed faces. Turning the whole group so the sun is to one side solves both at once.

It takes ten seconds and it is the difference between a usable group photograph and one nobody prints.

Open shade is better still where it exists, and it is worth choosing a spot for that rather than for the background.

A plain shaded wall with everybody comfortable beats a spectacular view with fifteen people squinting into the light.

That trade surprises people and it is almost always the right one.

Getting ready

Getting the hour right

Aim for the last hour or two before sunset. It is the largest single improvement available and it costs nothing.

If it is overcast, that widens the usable hours considerably rather than spoiling anything.

Agree clothes loosely as a group. A shared palette, nothing bought specially.

Planning it

What we ask

How many people, since a large group cannot be moved into shade easily.

Whether the hour is flexible, because it matters more than the location does.

And the ages of the oldest, because the running order follows from it.

Can we do this at eleven in the morning?

You can, though it is the hardest light of the day. Late afternoon is a large improvement and it costs nothing.

It might be overcast.

Good news. It removes the harsh-light problem entirely and widens the usable hours.

What if we can only do midday?

Then open shade, and we choose the location for that rather than for the view.

Which areas do you cover?

Ghorpadi, Koregaon Park, Mundhwa, Hadapsar, Magarpatta City, Wadgaon Sheri and Viman Nagar.

How many people can be photographed?

Tell us the number and we will suggest indoors or out.

Can we include pets?

Yes, and tell us in advance.

Can we do this at home?

Yes, for smaller groups.

Should we cancel if the forecast is bad?

Ask us first. Most sessions are far less exposed than they seem, and overcast weather usually improves them rather than spoiling anything.

Can we move the hour instead of the day?

Frequently the better answer. Shifting a session by a couple of hours often solves a light problem that moving the date would not.

Is the studio affected by any of this?

Not at all. Controlled light is identical whatever the day, which is why matched sets and catalogues belong there.

How do we book?

Send us the date and what you have in mind, and you get a clear quote for the coverage you actually need.

Aim for late afternoon

It is the single largest improvement available to an outdoor session, and it costs nothing.
