A window you cannot move
That combination is what makes this the session most often disrupted by conditions, and the one where a fallback matters most.
A wedding can be planned a year out around a season. A maternity session happens when it happens, and whatever the sky is doing that fortnight is what you get.
Which is why an outdoor plan without an agreed alternative is a plan with a real chance of not happening at all.
The alternative does not have to be a compromise. Indoor sessions and studio sessions are not lesser versions of an outdoor one; they are a different look.
Where the outdoors genuinely matters to you, the practical approach is to hold two possible days rather than one, and to accept the better of them.
Tell us at booking whether outdoors is essential or preferred. Those two answers produce different plans.
Where an outdoor session goes ahead under a bright sky, open shade is the answer rather than direct sun.
The edge of a building, under a tree, or a covered walkway all give soft directional light with none of the harshness, and they are usually within a few steps of wherever you were going to stand.
Standing in full sun for a maternity session is uncomfortable as well as unflattering, which is a second reason to avoid it.
It is also worth knowing that wind matters more than people expect at this session.
Loose fabric is a large part of how these photographs work, and a still day and a windy one produce quite different results from the same clothing.
Neither is worse; it is simply worth knowing so nobody is surprised.
Getting ready
Agree an indoor or studio alternative at booking, not on the morning. An outdoor plan without one has a real chance of not happening.
If outdoors is essential rather than preferred, say so and consider holding two possible days.
Bring two or three things to wear, tried on at the size you will be.
Planning it
Whether outdoors is essential or simply preferred, since they produce different plans.
The due date, so the window falls out of it.
And whether family are included.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main maternity photography page.
The agreed alternative runs. That is why we settle one at booking rather than on the morning.
No, it is a different look. The studio also has the advantage of being entirely unaffected by the sky.
Rarely. The window is a few weeks and it does not move, which is what makes a fallback matter here.

Yes. Say so at booking so the time is allowed.
Yes. Tell us what you are comfortable with.
Ask us first. Most sessions are far less exposed than they seem, and overcast weather usually improves them rather than spoiling anything.
Frequently the better answer. Shifting a session by a couple of hours often solves a light problem that moving the date would not.
Not at all. Controlled light is identical whatever the day, which is why matched sets and catalogues belong there.
Send us the date and what you have in mind, and you get a clear quote for the coverage you actually need.
Those two answers produce different plans. Either is fine; the assumption is what causes trouble.
