Several briefs, one evening

A committee frequently sends a photographer three different briefs without noticing.

One person wants a record of the programme. Another wants photographs of the guests. A third wants something usable for next year's publicity.

Each is reasonable, they are not the same job, and an evening spent trying to do all three does none of them well.

The fix is to have one person consolidate the brief before the event rather than several people adding to it.

Where the committee genuinely wants all three, that is a scale question and worth saying so honestly — it may need more time or a second photographer.

It is also worth establishing who is the single point of contact on the night, because a photographer receiving instructions from four people covers less than one receiving them from one.

That is not about convenience. It is about the evening producing a coherent set rather than three partial ones.

It is worth distinguishing between people who have a view and people who have authority, because they are not always the same.

Committees frequently contain several people who will offer instructions and one person who can actually decide, and the photographer cannot tell them apart.

Naming that person, out loud, at the start of the evening is the single most useful thing an organiser can do.

It is also worth agreeing what happens if the programme changes during the evening, which it usually does.

A decision made quickly by one person is worth more than a better decision made slowly by four.

That is not a criticism of committees. It is simply how an evening with a fixed running time works.
