Explore Portrait & Headshot PhotographyFamily sessions for people who have done this before — and who usually have a clearer idea of what they do not want than what they do.
Start with what went wrong last time
Families booking a second or third session almost always have a specific complaint about the first one, and it is the most useful thing they can tell us.
Too posed. Everyone looking at the camera in every frame. Nobody looking like themselves. The children visibly being managed. Over-retouched to the point where the photographs stopped resembling the people. These are the things people actually remember, and each one points directly at how the next session should run.
They are also all avoidable, but only if raised beforehand. A photographer working blind will default to whatever they usually do, which may be exactly the thing you disliked.
So the first conversation is short and specific: what did you keep from last time, what did you quietly delete, and what would make this set worth having. Ten minutes of that shapes the session more than an hour of anything else.

It is also worth saying how much you want the children directed. Some families want them arranged; others want them left alone and photographed as they are.
Both produce good sets and they look completely different, and it is a preference rather than a technical question.
Ten minutes establishing that at the start is worth more than any amount of adjustment during the session.
Getting ready
Send whatever you have from a previous session, including the ones you disliked. Knowing what you deleted is more useful than any description of what you want.
Decide beforehand how much retouching you want. It is the most common complaint about family sets taken elsewhere and it is entirely a preference.
Agree clothes loosely as a group. A shared palette rather than a uniform, and nothing bought specially.
Planning it
What you disliked about your last family photographs, which is the most useful brief we can get.
How much of the session should be arranged versus left to happen, since most families want a mix and the ratio differs.
And numbers and ages, which decide the space and the running order.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main family photography page.
Then tell us why, specifically. It is the most useful brief we can get and it is usually something concrete and easily avoided.
Then it will not be. A mix works best for most families — a few arranged frames that everyone can be given a copy of, and the rest left to happen.
Tell us your preference. Some families want essentially none; the default is restrained, because heavy retouching is the complaint we hear most about other sets.
