What a reference is actually made of
A maternity image that works is usually a specific light, a specific garment and a specific location, all doing equal work.
The flowing gown against a plain wall needs a gown that actually flows and someone to throw it. The backlit outdoor frame needs a particular half hour of the day. The dark, moody studio portrait needs a dark studio and clothing that reads against it. None of that is difficult, but all of it has to be decided in advance rather than discovered.
That is why the useful conversation is about what you liked in an image, not which image you liked. Nine times out of ten the answer is the light or the mood rather than the pose, and once that is clear there are several ways to get there.
Bring what you plan to wear to that conversation too. Clothing decides more about how these photographs look than almost anything else, and it is the element most often left until the morning of the shoot.
A maternity image that works is usually a specific light, a specific garment and a specific location, all doing equal work. Only one of those three is the photographer.
The flowing gown against a plain wall needs a gown that actually flows and somebody to throw it. The backlit outdoor frame needs the half hour before sunset. The dark moody portrait needs a dark room.
None of that is difficult. All of it has to be decided in advance rather than discovered, which is the entire argument for sending references early.
Couples who do that tend to get very close to what they hoped for. Couples who arrive with a folder and no conversation tend to get a good session that is not quite the one they pictured.
It is also worth saying what you do not want, which references rarely capture. Poses you would not be comfortable in, or a level of styling that is more than you had in mind.
That is far easier said beforehand than mid-session, and it saves the part of a shoot where somebody is quietly hoping the photographer will move on.
Within whatever bounds you set there is a great deal of room, and sessions with clear boundaries tend to be more relaxed rather than less.
Getting ready
Send the references and, more usefully, the outfits. Clothing decides more about how a maternity photograph looks than any other single thing available to us.
If the look you like is backlit and outdoors, we need a particular half hour of the day. If it is dark and studio-based, we need clothing that reads against a dark background. Both are easy once decided.
Bring more than one option. Bodies change quickly at this stage and the outfit that fitted at booking may not on the day.
Planning it
What you liked about the reference, rather than which reference you liked. Nine times out of ten it is the light or the mood.
Whether the session is studio or outdoors, since that follows directly from the answer above and decides the hour.
And whether your partner or children are included, because it changes the time to allow.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main maternity photography page.
Usually, once we work out what is actually producing the look — the light, the clothing or the setting. Send the references before the session and we will tell you what it depends on.
Depends entirely on the look you are after. Backlit outdoor frames need a particular time of day; controlled studio portraits do not. Tell us which appeals and we will plan around it.
The single biggest factor in how these come out, and worth deciding before the day. Send us options and we will say which will photograph the way you are hoping.
