Your first function

Arranging a function for the first time means not knowing what a photographer needs from you.

The answer is short and almost nobody is told it, so the information arrives late and the coverage suffers for reasons that were entirely avoidable.

What we need is three things: roughly when it starts, roughly how many people, and a list of who must appear in a group photograph.

That is it. Everything else we work out on the day.

What you can skip: a detailed schedule, worrying about the decorations being good enough, and any anxiety about the venue being ordinary. Functions in ordinary rooms photograph perfectly well.

The one thing worth doing that families rarely think of is telling us when the room will actually be ready, so the decorations are photographed before guests arrive rather than after.

It is worth asking what a photographer does on arrival, because families often feel they should be hosting us.

The answer is that we work around the function rather than being part of it. Nobody needs to introduce us, look after us, or feed us.

The best thing a family can do is forget we are there, which is also what produces the better photographs.

It is also worth saying that the function does not need to stop for us at any point.

The group photographs take a few minutes and everything else happens while the function carries on.

Families who plan around the photographer usually end up with a stiffer set than families who do not.
