First party, first photographer

Most parents booking birthday coverage have never done it and assume it needs organising.

It does not need much. A party photographs itself for the most part, and the coverage is mostly a matter of being in the right place when specific things happen.

What we need is small: when it starts, when the cake is genuinely being cut, and three or four names of people who must appear in a photograph.

The cake time matters because the printed time on the invitation is almost never when it happens, and the cake is the one moment that cannot be repeated.

What you can skip: a schedule, worrying about the decorations, and hiring anybody to organise the children. Games and chaos produce the best photographs.

It is worth knowing that the photographs families keep from a party are rarely the posed ones. They are the child mid-delight, the room full of people, and the grandparents.

The first two happen by themselves. The third does not, which is why the list of names is the one thing worth sending.

It is worth asking what a photographer needs during a party, because the honest answer is very little.

Somewhere to put a bag, and to be told when the cake is happening. Nothing else.

Families frequently feel they should be managing us, and the parties that photograph best are the ones where nobody thinks about it.

It is also worth knowing that a chaotic party photographs better than an orderly one.

Children running about, food on faces and games going wrong produce the photographs people keep. A well-behaved room produces very little.

So the anxiety about the party being under control is precisely backwards.
