A short function, mostly

An engagement is shorter and simpler than most families expect it to be.

Which means the coverage is straightforward, and the few things worth arranging are worth arranging properly because there is not much time.

What we need: the venue, the actual start time, and a list of which groups matter.

The two photographs families most often find missing afterwards are the couple alone and both families together. Neither happens without somebody deciding it will.

What you can skip: a detailed running order, worrying about the hall, and any elaborate arrangement. The lighting in most function rooms is difficult and it is handled.

It is worth protecting half an hour before the function for couple portraits, which is the single most useful thing you can arrange.

It is worth asking what the photographer needs to be told on the day, because it is very little.

Where the ceremony is happening, when it is genuinely starting, and who to look for. Everything else we work out.

Families arranging their first function frequently prepare far more information than is useful and leave out those three.

It is also worth knowing that these functions almost never run to time.

That is not a problem for the coverage, provided the actual timings are shared as they change rather than after the fact.

A short message on the day is more useful than a detailed plan the week before.
