Your first project

A designer photographing their first completed project usually does it too late.

The space gets photographed once the client has moved in and settled, by which point it is a home rather than the work.

The window is after the work finishes and before it is fully occupied, and it is frequently only days long.

What you genuinely need: access at the right moment, the styling decided in advance, and a list of what changed from the original space.

What you can skip: photographing every room, waiting for a final delivery that is running late, and elaborate styling. The changes you made are the subject.

For a first portfolio, three or four strong images of one project do more than twenty adequate ones. A portfolio is judged on its weakest entry more than its strongest.

It is worth asking what makes a portfolio image different from a record shot, because a first project usually produces the second by accident.

A record shot documents the room. A portfolio image argues for the decisions in it, which usually means fewer wide frames and more of the specific things you changed.

That is a decision made while shooting rather than in selection.

It is also worth knowing that a first project does not need many images.

Three or four strong ones establish a practice. A large set of adequate ones actively works against it, because a portfolio is read at the level of its weakest entry.
