We have never booked a photographer for anything. Where do we start?
By asking whatever you want to ask, including things that feel too basic. Almost nobody booking a first newborn or family session has done it before, and the industry tends to assume everyone already knows how it works. Nobody does the first time.
What do we actually need to buy or arrange?
For most sessions, nothing. A clear space near a window, clothes you already own, and a sensible time of day covers the majority of what we photograph. The things people spend money and effort on beforehand are rarely the things that make a session work.
How long does a session take?
Most are shorter than people expect. A portrait is about half an hour, a couple or family session about an hour, and a newborn session a couple of hours — most of which is feeding and settling rather than photography.
Do we need to know how to pose?
No, and nobody does. You are directed throughout every session. The people who look natural in photographs were being told where to put their hands thirty seconds earlier.
How do we know we are not being sold more than we need?
Tell us the shape of what you are planning and ask us directly what is worth booking. We would rather tell you to book less and have it go well. Everything is quoted for the coverage you actually need rather than from a fixed list.
