Your first proper one

Most people have never had a photograph taken of them deliberately.

Everything they have is a crop from something else, which is why the first professional portrait feels more intimidating than it should.

It takes about half an hour. You are directed throughout and you do not need to know how to stand or what to do with your hands.

What you genuinely need: two or three things you actually wear, and any specification the photograph has to meet.

What you can skip: buying something new, professional grooming unless you want it, and any attempt to look like somebody else.

The most common mistake is dressing for the photograph rather than for the job. A portrait where you look like yourself on a good day is more useful than one where you look like a different person.

And if you dislike being photographed, say so. It is extremely common and it changes how the session is run rather than being a problem.

It is worth asking to see a frame partway through, which almost nobody does and everybody benefits from.

Most people have a fixed idea of how they look in photographs, and it is usually worse than the reality.

Seeing one early in the session tends to relax people considerably, and the rest of the portraits are better as a result.

It is also worth knowing that you do not have to smile.

A neutral expression is entirely appropriate for a professional portrait and it is often more useful than a smile that was requested rather than meant.
