The window is shorter than you think
Everyone here means to get a proper photograph taken while the grandparents are visiting. Most of the time the fortnight goes by and it does not happen.
It is the most consistent regret we hear. Relatives come for a wedding, a birth or a festival, the days fill with everything else, and they fly home having never once been photographed with the grandchildren.
The practical fix is to book it as soon as you know their travel dates rather than sometime during the visit. A session on day two of a fortnight is a session that happens; one pencilled in for "some point before they leave" usually is not.
It is also worth photographing the ordinary version rather than only the dressed-up one. Three generations around a table in a flat in Kharadi is a more truthful picture of this family than everyone lined up in their best clothes, and in ten years it will be the one you look at.
The regret we hear most often from families in Kharadi is very specific: relatives came, the fortnight filled up, and everyone flew home without a single photograph of the three generations together. It happens because there was always going to be a better day, and then there wasn't.
Booking it early in the visit is genuinely the whole fix. Once it is in the calendar with a time attached, it happens; left as an intention, it competes with every other thing a visiting family wants to do and loses.
Because these sessions are so often tied to a visit, keep the ambition modest. A short session that happens beats an elaborate one postponed until the day before the flight.
It is also worth photographing the ordinary version rather than only the dressed-up one. Three generations around a table in a Kharadi flat is a truer picture of this family than everyone lined up in their best clothes.
If relatives visit annually, doing this each time builds something these families otherwise lack: a yearly record of a family that is only together for a fortnight a year.
Getting ready
Book it for the first weekend of the visit, not a convenient point during it. Sessions left until later are the ones that lose out to everything else and the flight does not move.
Agree clothes as a group beforehand rather than on the morning. A loose palette, nothing bought specially, and nothing anyone has to be talked into wearing.
If older relatives are travelling, plan for them to be photographed early. Jet lag and a long journey are real, and the frames with them in are the reason the session exists.
Planning it
When they arrive and when they leave, before anything else. That window is the only real constraint and everything else is arranged inside it.
How many people, and how old the oldest are. Both change the running order and neither can be improvised on the day.
And whether the session is at home or at the studio. With visiting relatives, home is frequently the easier answer because nobody has to travel twice.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main family photography page.
As soon as you have their dates, for early in the visit. Sessions left until the end of a trip are the ones that get lost to everything else.
Yes, and for older relatives it is often the better answer. We work with the rooms and light you have rather than rearranging the place.
Say so when you book, not on the day. We photograph the seated arrangements first while everyone is fresh and build outward from there.
Kharadi, Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar, Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa, Chandan Nagar and Kalyani Nagar are closest, and we shoot across Pune.
Early in the visit, not late. Tell us their dates and we will find a slot in the first few days.
Yes, and with visiting relatives it is usually easier — nobody has to travel and older family members are more comfortable.
Shorter than people expect, and we keep it that way deliberately. Everyone present for forty minutes beats a long session half the family drifts out of.
If you want that in the record, yes. It is increasingly how these families look, and there is no reason to pretend otherwise.
Yes, and tell us in advance. A dog changes the pace of a session and works better as a plan than a surprise.
A loose palette rather than a uniform. Nothing matching, nothing bought specially.
Tell us the number and we will plan for it. Large groups need space and someone keeping the order moving.
Yes, and with visiting relatives we would recommend it. Forty minutes with everyone present beats a long session half the family drifts out of.
Yes, late in the afternoon. Tell us how many people and we will suggest a time.
Yes, and the combinations matter. Send the groupings you want and we will work through them properly.
Send us their travel dates and we will find a slot early in the visit, while it can still actually happen.
