Somebody has to clean it
A cake smash makes a mess of a floor somebody else has to clean.
That is the whole reason this session is awkward at a venue, and it is almost never raised until the cake is already on the floor.
A restaurant, café or function room will usually have a view about it, and it is a reasonable view to have.
Asking beforehand is straightforward and it changes the answer: told in advance, most places will suggest somewhere suitable or a time when it does not matter.
Told afterwards, it becomes a problem for the family, for the venue and for whoever booked the room.
The studio removes it entirely, which is why a good proportion of these happen there and the party is covered separately.
It is worth knowing that venues who say no to a cake smash are usually saying no to the mess rather than the photography.
Which means the question to ask is not whether you can be photographed, but whether there is somewhere a one-year-old can make a mess.
Framed that way the answer is more often yes, and they will point you at a suitable spot.
Framed as a photography question it tends to get a photography answer, which is not the constraint that matters here.
It is also worth asking whether the venue would rather this happened outdoors.
A courtyard or terrace solves the floor problem completely and usually has better light than an interior function room does.
Where that is offered, take it — it is a better session as well as an easier conversation.

Bring a change of clothes, wipes and something to wrap them in.
Keep the outfit simple, and bring a second for the clean portraits.

Ask them about the cake specifically. Most are helpful when told in advance and much less so when not.
Should we do this at the studio instead?
Plenty of families do, and cover the party separately.

How long does it take?
Less than expected. The cake part is short.

Yes, and it is usually three or four questions. Tell us the kind of space and we will send them over so it can go in one message.
What if the venue wants something in writing?
Ask them what they need and we will provide it. Venues asking for something in advance is normal rather than a problem.
Can we use the studio instead?
For most sessions, yes, and it removes the permission question entirely. The studio is in Wadgaon Sheri.
How do we book?
Send us the date and what you have in mind, and you get a clear quote for the coverage you actually need.
Can you speak to the venue directly?
If it helps, yes. Usually it is quicker for you to ask since it is your booking, and we will send you exactly what to ask.
What if permission comes through late?
Tell us as soon as you know either way. A confirmed fallback means a late no changes the location rather than the date.
Do you photograph at the studio as well?
Yes, and for newborn, maternity, portrait and most product work it is usually the simpler option.
Can we see examples before booking?
Yes. Tell us what you have in mind and we will show you work that matches it rather than a general portfolio.

It is the one question nobody asks, and the one that causes the trouble.
