A couple shoot is small enough that people assume permission does not apply.

Two people and a photographer is not a production, and that is exactly why it usually goes unasked.

Most of the time nothing comes of it. Occasionally somebody is asked to stop halfway through, which is a poor way to spend an hour that was meant to be relaxed.

Asking is quick and it also tends to produce a better session, because a place that has agreed will often suggest where and when.

The other advantage of settling it beforehand is that it removes the low-level awkwardness of not being sure whether you are allowed to be doing this.

That awkwardness is visible in photographs, which is the practical reason it is worth removing.

The other thing worth knowing is that a quiet weekday morning is a different proposition from a weekend afternoon at the same place.

Venues that would decline at their busiest are frequently relaxed when nothing is happening, and the photographs are better for the emptiness anyway.

So the useful question is not only whether, but when.

Asked that way, a no often becomes a yes with a time attached.

Where nowhere obvious presents itself, the studio is worth considering rather than treated as the last resort.

It is private, nobody is watching, and for couples who find being photographed in public uncomfortable that removes the main obstacle.

A good number of these sessions end up there for exactly that reason and the results are better for it.
