Whose guests are these

At a venue event, not everyone in the room is your guest.

In a hired space inside a trading business, the room usually contains staff, other customers and people passing through, and the coverage has to account for it.

That matters for two reasons. Wide frames can contain people who did not agree to be photographed, and images intended for publication need to be clean of them.

Where the event is being covered for marketing or press, that is not a nicety — it is the difference between a usable image and one that cannot be published.

So it is worth establishing early whether the space is exclusively yours, and whether the images are going anywhere public.

Told both, the coverage is framed accordingly from the start rather than filtered afterwards, which loses the best frames.

It is worth agreeing in advance how consent will be handled if the images are going anywhere public.

At a private event a line on the invitation usually covers it. At a venue with other customers present, it does not, and no line on your invitation binds somebody at the next table.

The practical answer is framing rather than paperwork: shoot so the people who did not agree are not identifiable.

That is straightforward when planned and impossible to retrofit.

It is worth deciding beforehand whether a photographer should be visible or unobtrusive.

At a launch, visible is usually right — people expect it and behave accordingly. At a private dinner in a public venue it rarely is.

The two produce noticeably different sets, and it is worth a sentence rather than being left to judgement on the night.
