Ask before, not during

Anywhere public or commercial, the question of what is allowed comes before the question of what looks good.

Maternity shoots are the ones most likely to be planned around a location somebody saw and liked, and locations in this part of the city usually belong to somebody.

Gardens, courtyards, terraces, cafés and hotel grounds are all privately held, and most have a view about photography on the premises.

Some are entirely relaxed, some ask, some charge, and some decline. We cannot tell you which from here, and neither can anybody else without asking.

What we can say is that it is far better to ask a week before than to arrive and find out — a maternity session is not something to reschedule at short notice.

The studio sidesteps all of it, which is why a good number of these end up there once the location question is properly looked at.

The questions worth asking a venue are short and there are only a few of them.

Whether photography is permitted at all. Whether they would prefer a quieter hour. Whether anything is off limits. And whether a small group is treated differently from two people.

That last one catches people out, because permission for a couple does not always extend to a family group arriving with them.

Sent as one message, those four questions usually come back answered the same day.

It is worth remembering that a location can be beautiful and still be a poor place to spend an hour.

Shade, somewhere to sit between setups and somewhere to change all matter more than the backdrop does, and none of them show up in the photograph that made you want the location.

Asking about those alongside permission tends to produce a much better session.
