At a community or workplace event, the audience for the photographs is the people in them.

That is different from a public event, where images go to people who were not there and the subjects are largely strangers to each other.

Here the set circulates among the same group, gets looked at closely, and is remembered.

Which raises the value of getting people photographed well rather than merely photographed, and lowers the value of volume.

It also means it is worth knowing whether anyone present would rather not appear, particularly at a workplace gathering where people may feel unable to say so on the night.

Asked in advance by an organiser, that question gets an honest answer. Asked by a photographer during the event, it usually does not.

And it is worth agreeing before the event where the images will be posted, because that changes what people are consenting to.

It is worth writing the consent line into whatever announcement goes out rather than raising it on the night.

At a workplace or community gathering, somebody asked in front of colleagues will almost always say yes regardless of what they think.

That is not meaningful agreement and it is the situation that produces complaints afterwards.

It is also worth agreeing where images will be posted before anybody is photographed.

Consent to appear in a record of the evening is not consent to appear on a public page, and the two get conflated constantly.

Saying which, in advance, is the whole of the fix.
