These are the functions where everybody is having the best time and looking the worst.

Covered in turmeric, dancing badly, or laughing with their mouth full. That is exactly what makes the photographs good and it also requires some judgement.

A frame that is joyful and a frame that is unflattering are frequently the same frame, and the difference is often a matter of a fraction of a second.

Choosing the joyful version is most of the editing work on these functions, and it matters more where guests will keep seeing each other afterwards.

None of that means a sanitised set. The mess and the noise are the point and removing them would leave nothing.

It means the selection is made with the people in it in mind, which is ordinary care rather than a special request.

It is also worth telling us if any guest would rather not be photographed at all, which is straightforward when known.

It is worth being specific with us about what should not be included.

Every family has something — a relative who dislikes being photographed, a moment that was funnier at the time, a guest who had rather too good an evening.

Named beforehand, none of it appears. Left unmentioned, it is a judgement call we have to make without knowing your family.

It is also worth remembering that these functions produce a great many photographs of guests dancing.

Dancing photographs are affectionate or unkind depending almost entirely on the moment chosen, and choosing well is most of the work.

The set should look like everybody enjoyed themselves, because they did.
