Short enough to happen

This is one of the few sessions short enough that scheduling is not the problem.

Which is worth saying plainly, because families who have struggled to arrange anything else often assume this will be difficult too.

It is not. The cake part is brief, the whole thing rarely takes long, and it needs one adult rather than a coordinated household.

That makes it a good candidate for a weekday, when everywhere is quieter and there is more choice of time.

Where other family want to watch, that is worth deciding in advance, because an audience changes the room rather than the session.

And where only one parent can be there, nothing is lost. This is a session about a one-year-old.

It is worth doing this before the birthday rather than on it.

The day itself usually has a party, relatives and a schedule attached, and a cake smash squeezed into it becomes another thing to fit in.

A week earlier there is nothing else happening, the child is not overstimulated, and the photographs are better for it.

Almost every family assumes it has to be on the day and almost none of them need it to be.

The other advantage is that a separate session is much easier to move if the child is unwell, which at that age is a real possibility.

Attached to the birthday, it either happens badly or not at all.

It is also worth checking whether the child naps at a fixed time, because scheduling around it is easy and scheduling into it is not.

Almost every difficult cake smash turns out to have been booked over a nap.
