It has to fit

A maternity session competes with everything else in a busy few weeks.

Appointments, work, and the general business of preparing for a baby all sit in the same stretch, and a session that needs half a day usually loses to them.

That is why so many of these get postponed until the window has closed. Not reluctance — scheduling.

The practical answer is to keep it short enough that it fits rather than competing. An hour, close to home or at the studio, at a time that is already free.

It is worth being honest with us about how much time there genuinely is, because a plan built on two hours that turn out to be forty minutes produces a rushed session.

Told forty minutes, we plan a forty-minute session and it works.

It is worth booking the slot before you are sure you want it, which sounds odd and is the practical answer.

A held date can be released. A date you did not hold is gone, and in a stretch this short there is rarely a second option.

Most of the maternity sessions that never happen were never actually declined; they simply drifted past the window while nobody committed.

The other thing worth saying is that the session does not need to be at a weekend or in daylight hours if that is genuinely difficult.
