Finding the overlap
One parent is usually available. Both, at the same time, in the same room, during the narrow stretch when a newborn photographs well, is a much smaller window.
Families solve it by defaulting to a weekend, which is reasonable and often wrong — weekend mornings with a two-week-old are frequently the worst hour of the week rather than the best.
The better approach is to find the overlap first and fit everything else around it, including the day of the week.
It also means planning for one parent being late, because on any given morning one of them will be.
A session ordered so the frames needing both of you happen first, rather than last, survives that. Ordered the usual way, it does not.
Weekday mornings deserve a specific mention because almost nobody asks for them and they are frequently the best option available.
Newborns are generally at their most settled early, and a weekday morning is quieter everywhere than a weekend one.
The obstacle is usually work rather than preference, and it is worth checking whether a couple of hours is actually harder to arrange than a whole weekend day.
For many people it is not, and the session that results is better.
The other thing worth deciding is what happens if only one of you makes it. Told in advance, the session is planned for one parent and works completely.
Told nothing, we plan for two, and the frames that were meant to include both are the ones that do not exist.
It is also worth saying that we would rather you booked a realistic slot late than an ideal one that gets cancelled.
Sessions abandoned at short notice are almost always ones that were booked optimistically in the first place.
Getting ready
Work out the hour you are both genuinely free, and tell us that rather than a preferred day. Weekday mornings are frequently better than weekends here.
Tell us if one of you may arrive late, so the running order accounts for it.
Clear a patch of floor near the brightest window. That is the whole setup.
Planning it
When you are both actually free, which is a different question from when you would like this.
Whether either of you might be delayed.
And who else will be in the room.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main newborn photography page.
That is fine, though weekday mornings often suit a newborn better. Tell us your real constraints and we will work to them.

Either. Home means nothing to pack; the studio gives controlled warmth and light.
Yes. Tell us who is coming and roughly when.
More than the photography needs. Feeding and settling take up most of it.
Ask rather than assuming it is too late. Newborn windows are short.
Ask and we will tell you honestly what is open. A held date can be released; a date you did not hold is usually gone.
Tell us as early as you can. Moving something is straightforward; quietly letting it lapse is how these end up not happening.
Frequently, and almost nobody asks. Weekday mornings suit small children better and everywhere is quieter.
Send us the date and what you have in mind, and you get a clear quote for the coverage you actually need.
