The child, not the year

The best test of a photograph of a child is whether it is about the child.

A frame where the setup, the outfit and the treatment are doing most of the work is a frame about those things, and they are the parts that go out of date.

A frame where a child is being themselves in decent light is about the child, and children do not go out of date.

That is the whole argument and it is more practical than it sounds. It means less arranging, plainer clothing and more patience.

It also produces a session that is easier for everybody, because a baby doing whatever they were going to do anyway is not being asked for anything.

The elaborate version is available and plenty of families want it, which is entirely fine.

We will simply tell you honestly which parts of it are likely to look of their time later, because that is more useful than agreeing with everything.

It is worth separating what a photograph shows from how it has been made to look.

A baby laughing is content, and content does not date. A warm colour treatment applied over the top is style, and style does.

Almost every photograph that feels dated is one where the style has become more visible than the content.

The practical version of that is simple restraint, and it costs nothing at all.

It also means a set holds up better when it contains a range: some close, some wide, some serious, some not.

A set shot entirely in one register reads as a project of its time rather than as a record of a child.
