Ritual lasts, decor dates

At these functions the ritual ages perfectly and the decorations do not.

A Dohale Jevan performed the way it has been performed for generations looks the same in a photograph from any decade.

The decorated backdrop behind it does not. Styles in function decor move quickly and they place a photograph within a couple of years.

That is worth knowing because families frequently ask for heavy coverage of the decorations and comparatively little of the ritual itself.

Twenty years later the proportions people wish for are usually the other way round.

The decorations still get photographed properly, because somebody arranged them and will want them. It simply should not be most of the set.

The people, the ritual and the faces are what the family will come back to.

Function photography has one durable subject that is almost never prioritised, which is the older generation present.

Decorations, food and the room are all photographed thoroughly. Great-aunts and grandparents are photographed incidentally, and they are who families look for in twenty years.

It takes two minutes to ask for them specifically and it changes what the set is worth later.

Treatment matters less here than at almost any other session, because these are records first.

A record edited lightly reads correctly whenever it is looked at, and one edited to a current style reads as that year twice over.

That is worth a sentence at booking rather than a conversation at delivery.
