What survives a decade
Whatever a five-year-old is enthusiastic about this year will be unrecognisable to them in ten, and a party photographed mostly as a themed set becomes a record of that rather than of them.
It is worth photographing the theme properly, because it mattered enormously on the day and the child chose it.
It is also worth making sure most of the set is the child, the guests and the faces, which is what anybody actually returns to.
The other thing that ages badly is heavy treatment. A party edited with whatever look is current will read as that year twice over — once for the theme and once for the processing.
Light editing on a party set is the safer choice, and it is what we do unless asked otherwise.
Ask and we will do whatever you prefer, and tell you honestly how it is likely to look later.
It is worth noticing that the frames families still enjoy from old birthdays are almost never of the party itself.
They are of the guests, the grandparents, and the child mid-something. The room, the cake table and the decorations are looked at once.
That is a consistent pattern and it is worth weighting the coverage towards it rather than towards what was arranged.
The decorations still get photographed, because they mattered on the day and somebody made them.
What changes is the proportion, and the proportion is what determines whether the set is worth revisiting.
A short list of people beats a long list of things every time.
Getting ready
The theme gets photographed properly, and it should not be most of the set.
Send three or four names of people who must appear, because faces are what survives.
Tell us if there is a hard finish time, since group photographs then move earlier.
Planning it
How much weight goes on the theme against the people.
Who must appear in a photograph.
And how much treatment you want on the set.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main birthday photography page.
Then it gets photographed properly. It should just not be most of the set, because themes date faster than anything else at a party.
Yes, if you ask. We will tell you honestly that heavy treatment dates a party set twice over.

Yes. Tell us which rooms and how many people.
Yes, and they produce the best candids.
Tell us at booking, since they compete during the cake.
Lightly by default. Tell us your preference.
Yes, honestly, and then shoot whatever you have decided you want. That is more useful than agreeing with everything.
Not always, and it would be a poor rule. It is worth having some plain frames in every set so there is something that works whenever anybody looks at it.
Send us the date and what you have in mind, and you get a clear quote for the coverage you actually need.
The theme gets photographed properly. It just should not be most of the album.
