Cake Smash Photography in Sangamwadi, Pune

Cake smash sessions in Sangamwadi — cheerful now, and worth a thought about how they look later.

Family cutting the cake together at a first birthday party, guests applauding around them

Two audiences, twenty years apart

A cake smash has two audiences: everybody now, and one person much later.

The child in it will see these eventually, and what delights a room today is not always what that person enjoys at twenty.

That is not an argument against doing it. These are among the happiest sessions we photograph and most people are glad to have them.

It is an argument for a plain setup and a few clean portraits alongside the mess, so the set has something in it that is simply a good photograph of a one-year-old.

Elaborate themed backdrops are the part that ages hardest, because they mark the year unmistakably and they are the loudest thing in the frame.

A plain background, good light and a genuinely delighted child produces something that works at every point in the next fifty years.

Whatever you choose, we will say honestly which parts are likely to look of their time.

It is worth thinking about what the child would want to see rather than only what looks good now.

In our experience the frames people are happiest to have shown to them later are the ones where they simply look delighted, without much else going on.

The heavily produced ones are enjoyed as a curiosity rather than kept.

That is a low-cost consideration because it changes almost nothing about the session.

A plainer background and a few clean frames alongside the mess is the entire adjustment.

Everything else about the hour stays exactly as it would have been.

Getting ready

Something that works later too

A plain background rather than a themed backdrop. It is the element that marks the year most unmistakably.

A few clean portraits before the cake, so the set contains a straightforward photograph of the child.

Simple clothing, and a second outfit for those clean frames.

Planning it

What we discuss

How elaborate you want the setup, and what that means for how it looks later.

Whether clean portraits happen first.

And what time suits the child, since there is only one cake.

Should we get a themed backdrop?

It is the element that ages hardest, because it marks the year unmistakably and it is the loudest thing in the frame.

What if the child refuses?

Common and not a failure.

Which areas do you cover?

Sangamwadi, Yerawada, Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar and Ghorpadi.

Do we bring the cake?

Tell us what you have in mind and we will confirm.

How long does it take?

Less than expected. The cake part is short.

Can family watch?

Yes, from behind us rather than beside us.

How much editing do you do?

Lightly by default. Tell us your preference.

Will you tell us if something is likely to date?

Yes, honestly, and then shoot whatever you have decided you want. That is more useful than agreeing with everything.

Is plainer always better?

Not always, and it would be a poor rule. It is worth having some plain frames in every set so there is something that works whenever anybody looks at it.

How do we book?

Send us the date and what you have in mind, and you get a clear quote for the coverage you actually need.

They will see these eventually

Worth having a few plain frames alongside the mess, for that reason alone.
