Two audiences, twenty years apart

A cake smash has two audiences: everybody now, and one person much later.

The child in it will see these eventually, and what delights a room today is not always what that person enjoys at twenty.

That is not an argument against doing it. These are among the happiest sessions we photograph and most people are glad to have them.

It is an argument for a plain setup and a few clean portraits alongside the mess, so the set has something in it that is simply a good photograph of a one-year-old.

Elaborate themed backdrops are the part that ages hardest, because they mark the year unmistakably and they are the loudest thing in the frame.

A plain background, good light and a genuinely delighted child produces something that works at every point in the next fifty years.

Whatever you choose, we will say honestly which parts are likely to look of their time.

It is worth thinking about what the child would want to see rather than only what looks good now.

In our experience the frames people are happiest to have shown to them later are the ones where they simply look delighted, without much else going on.

The heavily produced ones are enjoyed as a curiosity rather than kept.

That is a low-cost consideration because it changes almost nothing about the session.

A plainer background and a few clean frames alongside the mess is the entire adjustment.

Everything else about the hour stays exactly as it would have been.
