An engagement set will eventually be looked at next to the wedding album.

Which means the two should be treated consistently, and that is a decision worth making at the engagement rather than at the wedding.

Where the engagement was edited in one style and the wedding in another, the pair reads as two unrelated events rather than one story.

That happens easily when they are months apart and fashions have moved, and it is entirely avoidable by deciding once.

The safer choice for both is restrained treatment, because it is the version least likely to look out of step with whatever comes after it.

The other consideration is the arranged family portraits, which are the frames most likely to be looked at by later generations.

Those want to be straightforward — people recognisable, lit properly, not stylised. They are records before they are anything else.

It is worth photographing the older relatives at an engagement specifically, for the same reason as anywhere else.

They are present, they are dressed, both families are together, and it is one of very few occasions where all of that coincides.

Those frames become the most valuable in the set within a decade and they are rarely asked for.

The other durable subject is the two families in one frame, which we mention elsewhere for a different reason.

Here the point is simply that it becomes a historical record of a moment that cannot be recreated.

It takes ten minutes and almost nobody plans for it.
