What survives the year

Almost all event photography is used for a fortnight and then never again.

The exception is the small number of frames that become the record of an occasion, a group or a person, and those are worth identifying at the time.

Annual events accumulate. Ten years of a society gathering photographed consistently becomes something genuinely valuable to the people in it.

Ten years of it photographed differently each time, with whatever treatment was current, becomes a pile of unrelated galleries.

That is worth deciding once, particularly for a committee, because consistency across years is what turns coverage into a record.

The other durable frames are the people who organised it, who are always photographed least and always looked for later.

Everything else — the room, the programme, the decorations — has a short useful life and that is fine.

It is worth keeping a consistent approach across years even when the committee changes.

That is harder than it sounds, because each new set of organisers has their own preferences and the coverage drifts accordingly.

Writing down what was agreed once, and passing it on, is what makes a decade of coverage into a record.

It is also worth photographing the room empty at each annual event.

Nobody asks for it and it becomes the frame that shows how a place changed over ten years.

Thirty seconds a year produces something no single event could.
