It will hang for years

A family photograph stays up long after the clothes in it have gone out of fashion.

That is the one thing worth knowing before deciding what everybody wears, and it argues against exactly what most families do.

Matching outfits in a single strong colour are the classic example. They look coordinated on the day and they date the photograph within a few years.

A shared palette of two or three quiet shades achieves the same coherence and does not fix the frame to a season.

Plain clothing without slogans, logos or large patterns is the safest choice by a distance, and it is also the cheapest because everybody already owns some.

The other thing that ages is the arrangement. A stiffly posed line dates in a way that a group standing comfortably together does not.

Neither of those costs anything to get right, and both are decided before the session rather than during it.

It is worth being deliberate about backgrounds as well as clothing.

A background that was fashionable — a particular wall, a particular style of setting — dates a family photograph as firmly as the clothes do.

Something plain, or something genuinely permanent like a landscape, does not.

The other consideration is who is in it. A photograph that includes the oldest generation becomes more valuable every year that passes.

Those are also the photographs most likely to be needed at short notice and least likely to exist.

If an elderly relative can be included, that frame is worth prioritising above everything else in the session.
