These barely date at all

A haldi photographed today looks much like a haldi photographed decades ago.

The ritual has not changed, the colours have not changed, and the way people behave during it has not changed either.

That makes these the most durable photographs in a wedding week, and it is worth knowing because coverage often goes elsewhere.

What does date is everything imposed on top: heavy treatment, fashionable colour grading, arranged group shots that mimic whatever was popular that season.

Left alone and photographed straight, these functions produce photographs that could be from any decade and will read the same way in another one.

That is an argument for restraint rather than for effort. Get close, stay out of the way, and let the function look like itself.

It is also why we would rather spend the time on the ritual than on producing something that looks current.

There is one element of these functions that does date, which is the clothing.

Wedding fashion moves, and photographs from these days are full of it, which is unavoidable and entirely fine.

It dates the photographs pleasantly rather than badly, in the way old family photographs are enjoyed partly for how everybody looked.

That is a different thing from a photograph dated by its treatment, which is enjoyed less generously.

Clothing dating a photograph is part of the record. Processing dating it is a decision that was made about the record.

The distinction is worth drawing because it explains why restraint matters in the edit and not at all in the wardrobe.
