Most photographs are judged on how they look now. The ones that matter are judged much later, by people deciding whether to keep them — and what survives that is rarely what was fashionable when they were taken.
Something most photographers will not tell you
Whatever looks most current now is the part that will look dated first.
Look at any set of photographs from ten years ago. You can date it instantly, and it is almost never because of the people in it. It is the treatment, the styling, and whatever was fashionable that season.
That matters because a good number of the photographs we take are meant to last a very long time. A newborn set gets looked at when that child is an adult. A wedding album gets looked at by people who were not born when it was made.
What survives is consistent and slightly dull to describe: plain clothing, real light, real expressions, faces. Rituals age wonderfully because they have not changed. Anything specific to your family — an heirloom, a piece of jewellery — ages well because it is tied to you rather than to a year.
What does not survive is heavy treatment, themed setups, anything with a printed date or a slogan in it, and a strong seasonal colour running through everything.
None of which means we will refuse to shoot the fashionable version. Ask and we will do it properly. What we will also do is say plainly which elements are the ones that will look of their time — and then do what you asked for. That is more useful than enthusiasm, and it costs us nothing to say.
And this is not an argument for boring photographs, which would be a poor one. It is an argument for the elaborate parts being some of a set rather than all of it, so there is always something in there that simply works whenever anybody looks at it.

What actually dates a photograph?
Almost never the people. It is the treatment first, then the styling, then anything in the frame that marks a year — a printed date, a slogan, a themed backdrop, a strong seasonal colour. Those are the elements that place a set precisely, and they are all decisions rather than accidents.
Will you refuse to do something fashionable?
No. Ask for it and we will shoot it properly. What we will do is tell you honestly which parts are likely to look of their time later, because that is more useful than agreeing with everything — and then do what you have asked for.
How much editing do you do?
Lightly by default. More is available if you want it, and it is worth knowing that heavy treatment is the single fastest-ageing element in any set. A lightly edited photograph ages very slowly, because there is nothing in it to go out of fashion except the people.
What ages best?
