You already know the routine

Experienced parents need less explaining and more planning.

A first baby session spends a fair amount of time on reassurance. A second one does not need it, and that time is better spent elsewhere.

Parents on their second know their own baby — when they feed, when they are pleasant, when nothing will work. That is better scheduling information than anything we could guess.

So the useful conversation shifts. Instead of what a session involves, it is which hour of the day is genuinely best and who else is going to be in the room.

The other change is the audience. The photographs are no longer only for the parents; the older child is now a participant with opinions about being included.

Handled well that is an advantage. Ignored, it is the thing that ends the session twenty minutes early.

The other thing experienced parents tend to get right is knowing when to stop.

First-time sessions often run past the point where the baby has had enough, because nobody wants to end early after all that preparation.

Parents on their second usually call it themselves, and the photographs are better for it.

It is also worth saying that the second set does not have to match the first, and trying to match it usually produces something worse.

Different child, different personality, different age at the sitting. A set that reflects that is more truthful than one bent into the same shapes.

Where parents do want them to sit together on a wall, that is a framing and printing decision more than a photographic one, and it is easier to solve later.
