The smaller second one

The second shower is smaller, and people assume that means it does not need photographing.

First functions are large because everybody is new to it. Second ones tend to be shorter, closer and less formal.

That is not a lesser event. It is frequently a warmer one, with fewer people who have to be there and more who want to be.

It photographs differently though. A smaller function has no crowd to disappear into, so the coverage is closer and quieter and the wide establishing frames matter less.

The other difference is that the rituals are familiar to everyone present, so they move faster. There is less waiting and fewer explanations.

That compresses the useful window, which is worth knowing before rather than during.

Second functions also tend to have a different guest list, weighted towards the people who genuinely wanted to come.

That changes what is worth photographing. At a large first function the coverage is about the event; at a smaller second one it is about the people in the room.

Told which it is, we shoot it accordingly rather than defaulting to the wide, formal treatment.

Where the first function was photographed and the second one was not, that gap tends to be noticed years later rather than at the time.

It is the same pattern as everything else on this page: nobody decides it, and it is only visible in hindsight.

A short booking covering the ritual and the group photographs is usually enough to close it, and it does not need to match the scale of the first.
