You have watched one of these

Most families have sat through an engagement before booking one.

Which means they arrive with something specific in mind, usually a frame that did not exist afterwards.

The two that come up most are the couple alone, without forty people behind them, and both families together in one photograph.

Neither happens by itself. The couple are surrounded from the moment they arrive, and the two families do not stand together unless somebody asks them to.

Both take about ten minutes and both need to be decided beforehand, because during the function nobody has the standing to organise it.

That is genuinely most of what makes an engagement album better than the last one you sat through.

It is also worth deciding in advance how formal you want this to be, because that is the other thing families change second time round.

First engagements are often photographed formally by default, and the resulting album is accurate but stiff.

If the last one felt like that, say so, and the coverage leans towards what is actually happening in the room instead.

The other thing worth carrying over from a previous function is what the room did to the photographs.

If the last one was in the same hall, we already know a great deal about how it will behave — the ceiling, the lighting, where the good corner is.
