The last one is out of date

Most families book this when they realise how old the last one is.

There is generally a photograph on a wall somewhere, and at some point somebody notices that the children in it are much smaller than the children in the room.

That is the honest trigger for most family sessions, and it is a good one. It also explains why they are booked in bursts, years apart, rather than regularly.

What changes between one and the next is usually more than people expect. Children grow, elders age, someone marries in, someone is no longer there.

It is worth naming that before the session rather than after, because it decides who has to be in the frame and which combinations matter.

A photograph of everyone is the obvious one. The pairings — a parent with each child, the grandparents together — are the ones people regret not having.

It is worth photographing the elders separately as well as in the group, and this is the one thing families most often say afterwards that they wish they had done.

A group photograph shows everyone. It does not show any one person particularly well, and that becomes the thing that matters later.

It costs five minutes at the end of a session and it is the frame most likely to be printed.

It is also worth thinking about where the photograph will actually go, because that decides the shape of it.

A frame on a wall wants a different composition from an image sent round the family on a phone, and the two are not interchangeable.

Families who have done this before usually know where the last one ended up, which makes the answer easy.
