The last one is out of date
There is generally a photograph on a wall somewhere, and at some point somebody notices that the children in it are much smaller than the children in the room.
That is the honest trigger for most family sessions, and it is a good one. It also explains why they are booked in bursts, years apart, rather than regularly.
What changes between one and the next is usually more than people expect. Children grow, elders age, someone marries in, someone is no longer there.
It is worth naming that before the session rather than after, because it decides who has to be in the frame and which combinations matter.
A photograph of everyone is the obvious one. The pairings — a parent with each child, the grandparents together — are the ones people regret not having.
It is worth photographing the elders separately as well as in the group, and this is the one thing families most often say afterwards that they wish they had done.
A group photograph shows everyone. It does not show any one person particularly well, and that becomes the thing that matters later.
It costs five minutes at the end of a session and it is the frame most likely to be printed.
It is also worth thinking about where the photograph will actually go, because that decides the shape of it.
A frame on a wall wants a different composition from an image sent round the family on a phone, and the two are not interchangeable.
Families who have done this before usually know where the last one ended up, which makes the answer easy.
Getting ready
Work out who has joined the family since the last photograph, and make sure they are in it.
Decide the pairings you want as well as the whole group. Those are the ones that get forgotten.
Agree clothes loosely as a group. A shared palette, nothing bought specially.
Planning it
How long since the last proper family photograph.
Who has joined or left since.
And the ages of the oldest, which decides the running order.

Tell us if you have booked with us before and we will pull up what was done, so the new work builds on it rather than repeating it.
Yes, and it is usually easier. Tell us what is coming up over the next year and we will plan it together rather than piecemeal.
Then describe what you did not like about something you have seen. It is a faster route to the right answer than trying to specify it from scratch.
You get an online gallery you can share, and tell us if prints or an album are wanted.
That is the intention and it is most of the reason people come back. Tell us at booking that you have used us before.
No. Tell us you have booked before and we will work from what was done rather than starting from scratch.
Earlier is better for anything tied to a date. For everything else, ask and we will tell you honestly what is open.
Yes, across Maharashtra and for destination weddings, with travel agreed upfront before anything is booked.
And who has joined the family since. Those two answers plan the session.
