Matching what you already have

The second product shoot has a constraint the first one did not: it has to match.

A listing page where half the images sit on one background and half on another reads as two businesses, and customers notice it even when they cannot say why.

This is the problem every growing catalogue hits. The original set was shot one way, the range expanded, and the new items were photographed somewhere else.

Matching an existing set is a specific job. Background, distance, angle and light all have to be reproduced rather than reinvented, and it is far easier when the reference images are supplied upfront.

Send the existing images before the shoot rather than after. Working from them is straightforward; correcting towards them afterwards is not.

If the original set is genuinely poor, the honest answer is sometimes to reshoot everything rather than extend it, and we will say so.

If the range is still growing, it is worth shooting a few items you have not launched yet while the setup is up.

Recreating the exact same conditions in three months is possible but not free, and a few extra frames now cost almost nothing.

Businesses that do this once rarely stop doing it.

Where a previous set was shot by someone else, it is worth asking whether the original files still exist.

Matching a set from compressed images off a website is possible but harder, and the originals make it straightforward.

It is a two-minute question that occasionally saves a great deal of work.
