One frame, not forty

A cake smash produces a lot of very similar photographs.

That is the nature of it. The child is in one spot doing one thing, and the difference between frame twelve and frame thirty is smaller than anyone expects.

What families actually use afterwards is two or three: one clean portrait before the cake, one of genuine delight, and one of the aftermath.

Knowing that in advance makes the session better rather than shorter. The clean portrait gets proper attention instead of being rushed through as a preamble.

It also changes the framing. A photograph that will be printed or sent to relatives wants room around it and a background that is not a doorway.

The volume still happens. It just stops being the point.

Backgrounds deserve a specific mention here, because the aftermath frames are the ones most likely to be shared and they are usually the least considered.

A doorway, a kitchen counter or a stack of chairs behind the child is invisible at the time and impossible to remove afterwards.

Thirty seconds of moving things before the cake arrives solves it entirely.

It is the cheapest improvement available to this whole session and almost nobody does it.

It is worth deciding in advance whether you want the mess or the child.

Frames that show the full scale of it are wide and include the floor. Frames that show a delighted one-year-old are close and exclude almost everything.

Both are worth having and they are shot at different moments, so it helps to know that both are wanted.
