One worth putting up

The point of this session is usually a single photograph.

Couples rarely want sixty images of themselves. They want one that they like, that looks like them now, and that can go somewhere.

That makes it an unusually focused session, and knowing it in advance makes it a much better one.

A session aiming at one strong frame spends its time differently from a session aiming at volume. Fewer setups, more attention to each, and a proper look at what is working as it goes.

It also means the frame can be composed for wherever it is going — upright for a narrow wall, wide for a shelf, square if it is going on a screen.

The rest of the gallery still exists. It just is not the point.

It is worth thinking about where a photograph of the two of you can actually go, because that is often the real obstacle.

Many houses have plenty of wall given over to children and none obviously available for the parents, and that is usually why the frame never gets printed.

Deciding the spot first makes the rest straightforward, and it decides the shape.

If there is nowhere obvious, say so — a photograph for a shelf or a desk is a different frame again and it is easier to place.

It is also worth agreeing whether these are for you or for anyone else.

Photographs made purely for the two of you can be looser and more private than ones that will be shown around, and knowing which changes how the session runs.

Most couples want the first and assume they have to ask for the second.
