Check for who is missing

The most common thing wrong with a party gallery is not a bad photograph. It is an absent person.

Everything looks fine until somebody notices there is nothing of a particular grandparent, or of the child with one of their parents.

That is almost always because nobody said in advance that it mattered, and a photographer covering a party reactively cannot know.

The fix is at the booking end: three or four names, and those photographs happen deliberately.

When the set arrives, the useful thing to do is check for people rather than for photographs. Look for who is in it before looking at how it turned out.

If somebody is missing, tell us and we will look again through everything taken. Frequently there is something usable that did not make the first selection.

The timeline depends on the size of the party and is confirmed with you in writing when you book.

It is worth understanding why the reactive parts of a party produce so much and yield so little.

Children move constantly, so a great many frames are half-expressions, backs of heads, and somebody walking through the shot.

The proportion that works is genuinely lower than at any other kind of session, and the set reflects that.

What raises the yield is not shooting more. It is knowing which moments to be positioned for, which comes from the list.

A photographer who knows that the grandparents arrive at four is standing in the right place at four.

That single piece of information does more for the finished set than any amount of additional coverage.
