The frames families keep from a first birthday are rarely the cake ones.
They are the child being got ready, the parents watching, and the mess afterwards being dealt with.

Where it happens separately, the same principle applies at a smaller scale — the getting ready, the reaction before the cake, the wrapping up.

Ask for it and it is simply part of how the session runs.
It is worth photographing the preparation as well, particularly if somebody made the cake.
A cake made at home by a parent or a grandparent has an hour of work behind it that is invisible in every frame of it being destroyed.
Ten minutes in the kitchen beforehand records it, and the person who made it is usually delighted.
It is also worth photographing whatever the child was doing immediately before.
The transition from an ordinary morning to being placed in front of a cake is the funniest part of the whole session and it is almost never covered.
Both of those need no arrangement and neither takes time from the cake itself.
Getting ready
The fifteen minutes either side
Ask for the getting ready and the aftermath, not only the cake itself.
Do not clear up before we have finished. The mess being dealt with is part of the record.
Bring a change of clothes, wipes and something to wrap them in.

Not in the least. It is a parent dealing with a small disaster cheerfully, which is what the day actually was.

Do we need to prepare anything for it?
No, and preparing would defeat it. The point is the thing as it actually is rather than as it would be if it had been arranged.
