Before the hall
An engagement function is a formal occasion and everybody behaves accordingly.
The hour before it, in somebody's house, is not — and that is where the photographs of people being themselves come from.
Relatives arriving, somebody adjusting somebody else's clothing, the general low-grade panic about being late.
It is entirely ordinary and it is the only part of the day when nobody is conscious of a camera.
Covering it means starting earlier rather than staying later, and the evening end of these functions is largely people eating.
Where both families are getting ready separately, it is worth deciding which house, because covering both is rarely possible.
Ask and we will tell you which usually yields more, based on how the day is arranged.
It is worth photographing the ordinary logistics as well as the ceremony.
Sweets being arranged on a tray, somebody counting chairs, a relative on the phone working out where somebody has got to.
That is what the day consisted of and none of it is in the usual set.
It is also worth covering the journey between house and venue, where several families relax completely for the first time all day.
Everybody is in a vehicle, dressed, with nothing to do for twenty minutes, and it is one of the better opportunities of the whole occasion.
It needs nothing arranged and almost nobody thinks to include it.

Starting at the house
Start coverage at the house rather than at the hall. It is the only part of the day when nobody is conscious of a camera.
If both families are preparing separately, decide which house — covering both is rarely possible.
Protect half an hour before the function for couple portraits.

How long do you stay?
As long as you book.
Does this replace what we booked?
Never. Whatever you booked is the main part of the session and gets done properly. This is an addition, usually ten or fifteen minutes.
It feels strange to ask for.
It does, and it stops feeling strange about five minutes in. That reluctance is extremely common and it is not a reason to skip it.
Do we need to prepare anything for it?
No, and preparing would defeat it. The point is the thing as it actually is rather than as it would be if it had been arranged.
