The last ordinary weeks
The whole set is usually posed, lit and arranged, which is what people book and what they want.
What is almost never there is anything of the actual weeks — the flat half-prepared, the bag by the door, sitting down halfway through something.
Those are the frames people describe wanting years afterwards and cannot find, because nobody thought they were worth taking at the time.
They take a few minutes at the end of a session and they need nothing arranged, which is the whole point of them.
It works best at home rather than at the studio, for obvious reasons, and it works best if nothing has been cleared away.
Ask for it and it is simply part of the session.
It is worth photographing the preparations rather than only the person.
The half-assembled cot, the bag by the door, the pile of things that have not been sorted out yet. That is what those weeks actually looked like.
None of it survives more than a few months and none of it is ever recorded, because it reads as clutter at the time.
It also gives the set something to be about beyond how somebody looked.
A maternity set that includes the flat mid-preparation tells a story; one that is only portraits shows a person.
Both are worth having and only one of them usually gets taken.
Getting ready
Ask for a few frames with nothing arranged, at the end of the session. They need no preparation at all.
Leave the half-prepared parts of the flat as they are.
Bring two or three things to wear for the arranged part.
Planning it
Whether you want anything unarranged as well as the posed set.
Whether this happens at home, since that is where those frames live.
And the due date, so the window falls out of it.

How the session itself works is covered in full on the main maternity photography page.
Sitting where you sit, in the flat as it is, with nothing cleared. A few frames at the end of a session, needing no preparation.
It is deliberately taken and properly lit. What it is not is arranged, which is the only difference and the entire value.

Either for the arranged set. The unarranged frames need home.
Yes. Say so at booking so the time is allowed.
Yes. Tell us what you are comfortable with.
Bring two or three options, tried on at the size you will be.
Never. Whatever you booked is the main part of the session and gets done properly. This is an addition, usually ten or fifteen minutes.
It does, and it stops feeling strange about five minutes in. That reluctance is extremely common and it is not a reason to skip it.
No, and preparing would defeat it. The point is the thing as it actually is rather than as it would be if it had been arranged.

They need nothing prepared, and they are the ones people describe wanting years later.
