A newborn session produces hundreds of photographs of a baby and almost none of where that baby actually was. The cot in the corner, the pile of things on the chair, the particular light in that flat at four in the afternoon.
All of it feels far too ordinary to photograph, and none of it lasts. People move, rooms get repainted, furniture is replaced — and the setting a family remembers most clearly turns out to exist nowhere at all.
The same gap shows up everywhere. A wedding album that begins at the function, when the wedding actually began hours earlier in a kitchen with too many people in it. A function set with nothing of the relatives who spent all morning cooking. A party covered start to finish with nothing of the quiet afterwards.
What you booked still gets done properly. That is the main part of any session and it is not being traded away. This is usually ten or fifteen minutes, or a decision to start an hour earlier rather than stay an hour later.
Most people feel slightly reluctant about it, because the room is not ready to be photographed and it seems absurd to be photographed doing nothing. That reluctance is precisely the point — a tidied room is a different room, and it passes about five minutes into a session.
Nobody has ever regretted having those frames. A good number of people regret not having them, and they are the ones who tell us about it.

Why would we want photographs of an untidy room?
Because that is the room you will remember, and it is the one that will not exist in five years. People move, rooms get repainted, furniture is replaced. The tidied version is a different room from the one you actually lived in, and it is the tidied one that everybody photographs.
Does this replace the photographs we booked?
No, never. Whatever you booked gets done properly and it is the main part of the session. This is an addition — usually ten or fifteen minutes — not a substitution for the arranged photographs you actually wanted.
It feels strange to book somebody to photograph us doing nothing.
It does, for about five minutes. Then it becomes the easiest session most people have ever sat for, because there is nothing to perform and nowhere to be. That reluctance is extremely common and it passes quickly.
What sort of thing do you mean?
The room before anybody tidied it. A feed or a bathtime. The hour of preparation before a function, when relatives are doing all the work. The clearing up after a party. Somebody doing their actual job rather than posing at a desk.
Is this more expensive?
It is usually a matter of where the booked time is spent rather than more of it. Where it genuinely needs an extra hour — covering the preparation before a function, for instance — we will say so, and say honestly whether it is worth it for your day.
