Somewhere you actually go

Most pre-wedding shoots happen somewhere neither person has been before.

A location is chosen for how it photographs, everybody travels there, and the resulting set is about that place rather than about the couple.

The alternative is to shoot somewhere the two of you genuinely go — where you met, where you eat, the walk you take.

Those places are usually unremarkable and that is the point. The photographs end up being about you because there is nothing else in them competing.

It is also a considerably easier shoot, because neither of you is standing somewhere unfamiliar being told what to do.

Couples dismiss the idea because their places feel too ordinary to photograph, which is exactly the reaction the good version of this provokes.

Suggest it and we will tell you honestly whether it will work photographically, which is a separate question from whether it is impressive.

It is worth including whatever the two of you actually do together, however unphotogenic it sounds.

Cooking badly, walking somewhere specific, sitting in a particular place that means something for reasons nobody else would guess.

Those produce frames that are about the two of you rather than about a setting, and they are much easier to be in.

It is also worth photographing the getting-there rather than only the arriving.

The journey, the waiting, the sitting down halfway through — that material tends to be the least self-conscious of the whole shoot.

It costs nothing because it is happening anyway.
