If you are selling or letting a home you have lived in, photograph it for yourself as well.

The listing photographs are cleared, tidied and impersonal by necessity, and they are the opposite of what you will want to remember.

It takes about ten minutes before the tidying starts: the rooms as you actually lived in them, the marks on a doorframe, the view you looked at every day.

Nobody thinks of it because the visit is booked for a commercial purpose and the tidying happens first.

It is worth photographing the things about a home that are specific to having lived there.

Heights marked on a doorframe, a repair somebody made themselves, the corner where a pet always sat.

None of that belongs in a listing and all of it belongs to whoever is leaving.

It takes a few minutes and it happens before any tidying begins, since tidying removes most of it.

It is also worth photographing the view at the hour you actually looked at it.

Listings show a view at its best. What you will want is the one you saw every morning, which is frequently a different thing entirely.
