Why the diary is easier here
Where a grandparent is at home with the baby during the week, the session can happen when the baby is at their best rather than when the parents are free.
That is a genuine advantage and most families do not think to use it. Mid-morning on a Tuesday is when a baby is most likely to be fed, awake and cheerful, and it is also when a studio is quietest. Weekend slots are busier and later in the day, which is rarely when a six-month-old is at their best.
It does mean agreeing beforehand who is bringing the baby and what they are comfortable with. A grandmother who has raised four children needs no instruction; she does need to know whether the parents want to be in the frames, and whether to bring a change of clothes.
If the parents want to be photographed too, that is a separate half hour and usually a separate visit — trying to do both around one baby’s good hour is how sessions overrun.
The scheduling advantage here is real and under-used. Where a grandparent is at home with the baby during the week, the sitting can happen at ten on a Tuesday — which is when a baby is most likely to be fed, awake and cheerful, and when the studio is quietest.
Families who wait for a weekend are competing for the busiest slots and photographing a baby at a worse hour, usually without realising there was a choice.

The weekday option deserves repeating because so few families use it. A baby photographed at ten on a Tuesday is a different baby from one photographed at four on a Saturday, and the studio is quieter.
Where a grandparent brings the baby, the sessions tend to be more relaxed than parent-led ones. Somebody who has done this several times before is not anxious about it, and babies read that.
It is worth agreeing beforehand whether the parents want frames of themselves. If they are at work, that becomes a separate short session rather than something squeezed into this one.
Getting ready
Bring a change of clothes and whatever your baby is usually happiest with. If a grandparent is bringing them, make sure they know what you want rather than assuming it will be obvious.
Weekday mornings are genuinely available here in a way they are not for households where both parents work. If somebody is at home with the baby, use that — mid-morning is the best hour a baby has.
Decide beforehand whether the parents want to be in any of the frames. If they are at work and the grandmother is bringing the baby, that is a decision to make in advance rather than on the day.
Planning it
Who is bringing the baby, because it changes the session. A grandmother who has raised four children needs no instruction; she does need to know what you want.
Your baby's routine, so the session sits at the hour they are reliably at their best rather than at the hour that suits a diary.
And whether this is one sitting or the start of a set. Consistency across the year is easy to build if we know at the first one.

Yes. Home suits households where several people want to be involved; the studio gives more control.
They often do. Tell us numbers so the room is set up for an audience rather than for two.
Yes, and it needs more time rather than different technique. Tell us at booking.
Of course. Tell us early and we will move it.
Please do. Objects with a story make a set specific to your family.
There is no bad age; the session simply changes. Older babies sit and make eye contact.
They usually do. Tell us numbers so the room is set up for it.
Yes, and early while the older child is still interested.
Yes, though weekday mornings are quieter and usually better for a baby.
Ask and we will tell you what is open. Baby sittings are short and easier to place than functions.
Tell us roughly how many and we will order the session so each gets their frames while the baby is still cheerful, rather than at the end when they are not.
Yes, and it is worth asking for. Those individual frames are used far more than the large group one.
Then no special arrangement is needed. A busy house is easier to photograph honestly than one cleared for the occasion.
