Haldi, Mehendi & Sangeet Photography in Yerawada

The functions before the wedding, in Yerawada homes that have hosted them for other weddings and will host them again.

A house that knows what it is doing

These rooms have done this before, and it shows.

A haldi in a house where the last one was three years ago runs differently from a haldi being improvised for the first time.

Everyone knows where to stand, which corner catches the light, and who does what. The function moves quickly and without instruction, which is a pleasure to photograph and gives you very little warning before each moment arrives.

The older women run it, and they run all three functions. They are also the people least likely to appear in the photographs, because they are working throughout — so we make a deliberate point of photographing them rather than only the couple.

The three functions still break in three different ways: haldi is bright and messy, mehendi is hours of stillness with a few minutes that matter, sangeet is dark and loud. Being covered as a block across consecutive days works far better than treating them as three separate jobs.

A house that has hosted these before has a rhythm, and following it is easier than directing it. Everyone knows where to stand and which corner catches the light.

The three functions still break in three different ways, and in a familiar space those differences get sharper rather than easier.

The women running them are the people to photograph deliberately. They are working throughout and they are almost never in the album.

Getting ready

A house that has done this before

Not much needs organising, because the people running it know the order. Tell them we will be moving around quietly and that is most of the preparation.

Point out the aunts and grandmothers who are running each function. They are the ones working throughout and the ones least likely to be in the album.

For haldi, tell guests to wear something they do not mind ruining. People who are worrying about their clothes do not take part.

Planning it

Planning three functions

Whether they run on consecutive days, which decides whether this is one commission or three.

Where each happens, since a house that has hosted these before usually has a particular corner it uses.

And which of the three matters most to you, because they are rarely equal.

Can you cover all three functions?

Yes, and it is the usual booking. They often run on consecutive days, so we plan them as one block rather than three jobs.

Ours is at home in a small space.

Normal, and it photographs well — everyone is close together, which is the point of the function.

Can you make sure the aunts and grandmothers are photographed?

Tell us who and we will. They run these functions and they are the ones most often missing from the album.

Which areas near Yerawada do you cover?

Yerawada, Kalyani Nagar, Koregaon Park, Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar, Vishrantwadi and Tingre Nagar, and functions across Pune.

Do you photograph the mehendi design?

Yes, and it is worth a few minutes once the hands are finished.

How do you handle sangeet lighting?

By working with it rather than against it. Stage light is dramatic and using it looks like the evening looked.

Can you cover functions at two houses?

Yes, which is common when families host separately. Send both addresses.

Can you cover just one function?

Yes. Plenty of families book only the haldi or only the sangeet.

Is your equipment safe at a haldi?

It is planned for. Getting close is the job.

Do you photograph the sangeet performances?

Yes. Send the running order if there is one.

Can you cover the haldi outdoors?

Yes, and it is usually better outdoors.

How many people can be in the frames?

As many as are taking part. Haldi photographs best when the frame is full.

Can you photograph at two houses?

Yes, which is common when families host separately. Send both addresses.

Do you photograph the sangeet rehearsals?

If you want them, yes, and they are often more relaxed than the performance.

How early do you arrive for haldi?

Before it starts, so the preparation and the courtyard are photographed before the mess begins.

The aunts are doing the haldi themselves.

Then they belong in the photographs as much as the couple do. Tell us and they are covered properly rather than incidentally.

Everything happens in the courtyard at home.

That is usually better than a hired space. Tell us roughly how many people and which part of the day each function falls in.

The elders know the sequence and we do not.

Then point us at them on the day. Somebody who knows what happens next changes the coverage more than any equipment decision.

Send us the dates

All three if you are having all three. Consecutive days are easier planned together.
